Whimsical hues of sunshiny yellow and vibrant blue greet you upon entering W39 Bistro & Bakery. Its cheerful colour palette, wooden wall panels and furnishings, and the overall homey ambience promise a delightful experience for everyone.

Sisters Jamie and Jasmine Lu, who grew up in a family of eight, realise the importance of a cosy dining ambience. "Sharing a hearty meal with loved ones over good conversations and laughs comes naturally to us. That's why we wanted to fill this cosy space with the same warmth and joy we share at our dining table, without compromising on top-notch food and drinks," shares Jamie.

Jasmine adds, "The look of the bistro has influence from classic country design with a modern eclectic approach. Some of our customers have expressed that they really love the design of our bistro and have also enquired where we got our furniture. They appreciate the cheerful yet laidback vibe of the interior and have even compared us to some cafes in Australia!"

While the sisters knew they had a gem in this corner shophouse in Clementi, certain elements proved to be a challenge in the whole design process. They consulted interior design company three-d conceptwerke to help them create a space that will look and feel like an extension of their diners' homes.

"As the cafe interior area is very small and was painted brown by the previous tenant, we had to make some drastic changes to make the space look bigger. We knocked down a huge bar counter," shares Jamie. "We wanted the space to not only have sufficient seating, but to look different, warm, and cheerful as well."

The Lu sisters understand that the restaurant's interiors draws customers in. "Every interior creates a different environment, mood, and atmosphere for the diners. A unique one will definitely be more memorable. Our interiors has helped differentiate us from other restaurants," Jasmine notes.

The communal table, which was customised and fabricated, is a definite headturner in the bistro and bakery. Considering that the sisters enjoy heartwarming meals with their big family, having a long dining table and mismatched bright chairs was a must.

W39 Bistro & Bakery has a treasure trove of vintage items in its pigeon hole area. The custom-made shelf wonderfully displays a collection of trinkets—some from the sisters' personal collection (toy binoculars, matchbox cars, and old mugs remind them of their happy days as kids), and others generously given to them by loyal patrons (like the mini carousel and a vintage camera).

One of the great things about being a neighbourhood cafe is the relationships they have forged with the people in the community. W39 Bistro & Bakery affords families and groups of friends the opportunity to feast on classic and modern dishes (such as the seared tuna, rainbow cake, and chocolate cake below), have meaningful conversations, and just enjoy a good time—together, in one long dining table, surrounded by interesting knick knacks from yesteryears.

At W39 Bistro & Bakery, home-cooked goodness is the secret ingredient of every dish. Some of the must-try dishes include Seared Tuna (slices of tuna filler gently seared on the outside, served with light wasabi mayo, avocado salsa, trout caviar, soy glaze, and shiso leaves), and the bistro's famous Rainbow Cake and Mr. Chocolate cake.
