One of the most visible and major areas of the home, the living room is a prime candidate for a home makeover. "Your living room is an essential space in your home; it’s a place where people gather and spend quality time together building memories," says Phillis Gill, author of Decorating Your Living Room on a Budget.

One of the ways to give your living room an inexpensive makeover project is by following the advice of Coral Nafie, co-author of About.com Guide to Home Decorating:

"First, empty the room so that you can see it anew. Then bring pieces in one at a time—slowly. Try a different arrangement from the one you’ve been using," says Nafie. "Find the focal point of the room. Is it the television? The view seen through a big picture window or from French doors? Arrange the room to take advantage of the focal point."

To further inspire you to rethink the design of your living room, check out these stunning before-and-afters:

Before

This living room looks outdated and visually heavy—the drab colours do nothing to uplift the look of the bulky furnishings. Even the artworks on the wall look listless.

After

Changing the window treatments, painting the walls soft grey, and adding statement-making and colourful pieces have made living room cosier, airier, and more open. Gone are the old furniture pieces that look fatigued.

Before

This simple shabby chic living room needs a stylish boost. It doesn't help that the greys and browns make the area a bit drab.

After

Ceiling medallions on the wall totally amp up the style metre of this living room. Add slipcovers, coloured cushions, a well-decorated centre table, and fresh flowers—and voila! A better and brighter living room.

Before

Bulky TV and furniture pieces, outdated carpet, and dull furnishings make this living room look tired.

After

Old furniture and appliances were banished to make way for visually light furniture pieces. A new coat of paint on the ceiling beams makes the place brighter. Light window treatments, accessories, and a burst of blooms complete the look.

Before

The hefty-looking lounge chairs make this living room look stuffy, and the accessories don't help, either. The decor on the wall looks misplaced and diminished, and the shelves look imposing.

After

Now the living room looks more sophisticated, light, and bright. A traditional English saddle-arm sofa takes centerstage, and is complemented by elegant furnishings and accessories. Painting the walls and ceiling white also did wonders.

Before

This living room is already a beaut—but it can even get better. How? Lose the outdated wall sconces and the crammed books on the shelves.

After

The books are gone, so are the sconces. They're now replaced with accessories and decors that look lighter, giving the living room a more balanced look. The sofa now houses colourful cushions that give the living room a vibrant feel. And those flowers effortlessly vivify the area.
