When it comes to choosing countertops, the choices are endless—even eco-friendly ones. One common pick is quartz. One of nature’s strongest minerals and also the world’s most abundant mineral, quartz has a relatively small eco-footprint and is stain-, scratch- and heat- resistant.

A pioneer in quartz surfaces, Caesarstone’s quartz surfaces boast non-porous and sealed surfaces to inhibit the growth of mildew and bacteria, are certified by Greenguard Environmental Institute for its low product emission, are long-lasting and sustainable and comply with the International Health and Safety Foundation sanitary standard.

Apart from benefitting the environment, eco flooring can provide better health standards for homeowners with its lower VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) and formaldehyde levels. At Evorich Flooring, the different types of indoor eco flooring available include laminate flooring which uses compressed wood instead of real solid wood, engineered wood flooring with raw materials obtained from sustainable resources, and High End Resilient Flooring (HERF) which is a relatively new and high quality flooring option that isn’t made up of wood at all.

What are VOCs?

Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs are gases emitted by a wide array of commercial products such as paints, cleaning supplies, pesticides, and even office equipment. It may have short- and long-term adverse health effects such as damage to the liver, kidneys, central nervous system or milder ailments like headaches or eye and respiratory tract infections.

Paint is one common product that contains harmful VOCs. That said, the concentration of VOCs is higher indoors rather than outdoors. Hence, it is important to go for eco-certified paints to decrease this exposure.

Dulux’s premium quality paints have been awarded the Singapore Green Label certification and are low in VOC and odour. The Dulux Pure, in particular, is eco-certified and specially formulated to purify and neutralise formaldehyde gas into water vapour, effectively refreshing indoor air.

There are no lack of air purifiers and filtration systems in the market, but why resort to them when you can grow your own natural air filters? Plants not only help to purify the air, they can be powerful filters that rid of harmful VOCs like formaldehyde and xylene. Studies have found that certain plant types are effective in filtering specific pollutants. For example, orchids rid the air of xylene, a pollutant found in glue and paints, while palms remove formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide from the air so you can enjoy pollution-free indoor air.

Window Films

When it comes to keeping the sun’s heat and glare out, most would immediately turn to curtains or blinds as a solution. While window coverings can effectively block out the light, the heat still penetrates into the home, which means you get darker and warmer interiors. With window films like the IQue however, not only is the sun’s glare controlled, it does so without lowering the amount of daylight that enters. This allows your home to enjoy optimal natural light without having to turn on the lights in the day. It also offers up to 98 percent infra-red and 99 percent ultra-violet rejection so your interior temperature is kept cool, thus minimising the need for air-conditioning.

Laminate is a common choice for many households because of its affordability, but they are not always eco-friendly. In fact, it is common for laminate to contain formaldehyde and emit carbon emission, hence compromising on the quality of indoor air. So if you’re looking to use laminate fixtures throughout your home, it’s best to go with an eco-friendly one with minimal carbon emission. Greenlam products not only meet the emission criteria of standards set by Greenguard Environmental Institute and Green Label Singapore, they emit less than half the allowed quantity so your indoor air quality would not be a health hazard.
