1. Find a starting point. And that starting point doesn’t have to be the room paint, since paint can be tinted to match just about anything. "Look for a color inspiration in a rug or fabric. Then ask a home center to create a paint color to match your decor," says Samantha S Thorpe, editor of 100 Decorating Ideas.

2. Balance and vary the scale. "A formal or geometric pattern gives subtle energy when it is small in scale and has a neutral-color background. Small patterns are perfect for adding interest to windows, flooring, and linens in small spaces. For boldly-colored, large-scale patterns, a little goes a long way. Try them on pillow shams or blanket."

Key thing to remember: If one pattern is bold, the other shouldn’t be so busy.

3. Create rest areas. Use white or solid colours in the room as rest areas—they will give the eye a place to rest and make you feel calm. "Use solids liberally in petite rooms for space-enhancing results," says Thorpe. You can also use solid colours to soften the patterns.
