Whether or not you have a designated guest room, it’s important to have the following items to ensure your guests enjoy their stay in your home.

1. Clean and freshly laundered linen. Your guest room is often left by itself on regular days, and odds are the bed will be a bit dustier than other rooms in your house. Change it out with freshly laundered ones, and lightly spray with a clean fragrance. It’s an extra touch your guests will appreciate.

2. A nightstand. It’s always annoying to have to place your watch, phone, or other personal belongings on the floor before bedtime, right? Give your guest a landing spot next to the bed for these items—a bedside table with cabinet is perfect, as there’s also storage space for his or her other things. If you don’t have one, a box, or stool will do.

3. A reading lamp and alarm clock. Your guests aren’t expecting a hotel-like ambience, but give them some hotel-inspired amenities, like a night lamp and alarm clock.

4. A chair. Even if you don’t have space for an armchair, it’s nice to provide a seat for your guest to sit on for, say, changing shoes, or even for putting his luggage on, if you don’t have your own luggage rack.

5. A tray. A tray lets your guest neatly corral his or her small belongings, like pens, flash drives, or mobile phones. You can also fill it with small snacks, so when your guest feels hungry in the middle of the night, he won’t have to venture out into the dark to find the kitchen.

6. A carafe or bottle of water. Again, some guests won’t feel comfortable having to ask you for the littlest things, like a glass of water. Place a carafe filled with drinking water in the room, and a glass solely for your guest.

7. Towels and basic toiletries. Most guests will be bringing their own toiletries with them, but it’s always a nice courtesy to them to provide their basic bathroom needs, like fresh towels, a new toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and shampoo.

8. Books or magazines. If you’re planning on leaving your guest home while you work, give him some items he can use to entertain himself while you’re away, like books or magazines. Some DVDs will also work.
