1. Set aside some time pre-trip to clean up around the house as much as you can, and put everything back in order.

2. Go through the practical stuff first: Turn off and unplug all electric switches and appliances, make sure any gas pipe or tank is tightly sealed shut, all faucets are also shut with no drips.

4. Buy or make your own faux arrangement of flowers, and place them on an entryway table, your kitchen counter, or dining table—whatever space or area that will be the first thing you see when you enter your house. Blooms make one’s day feel like it is a special occasion, even when it’s not.

5. Close windows, and bring out a small bowl or jar of scented potpourri or your preferred essential oil (don’t spray all over). When you come back from your trip and open your door, your home will smell subtly fragrant.
