Unlike its plastic counterpart, glassware can accumulate a film over a period of time which dulls its shine. Here are some ways to minimise scratches and retain its original beauty:

1. Instead of using a dishwasher, hand wash your glassware.
A dishwasher may be time-saving and efficient, but it increases chances of the glass breaking, cracking, and chipping. Arrange your glasses with ample space in between to avoid clashes. Thereafter, use a delicate wash cycle to gently rinse your glassware and skip the heated drying cycle. Delicate glassware with fine stemware should never be used in a dishwasher.

2. Wash soon after use with hot water.
To minimise stains, wash as soon as you are done with your glassware. Hot water is more effective in eliminating bacteria and breaking down grease. For stains that are as stubborn as cliché, soak the glasses in vinegar and soapy solution to soften the stain, and gently scrub them with a soft cloth or sponge.

3. Natural cleaners
Some glassware such as wine glasses are porous and will absorb smell from detergent. Other than using unscented mild detergent, alternatives include natural cleaners such as white vinegar, baking soda, lemon, and toothpaste.

4. Drying the glass
Leaving the glasses to air dry can leave water spots. Use unscented paper towels or a lint-free cloth to avoid shedding fibres into the glass.

5. Storage
After all the cleaning, it’s time to store these glassware properly to minimise stressing the glassware. Glassware with delicate rims should be stored upright. For glassware to be stored upside down, dry them thoroughly to avoid bacteria or mould growth.
