7 Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks

Part of the Chinese New Year preparations is cleaning every corner of our homes. It should be done well in advance before the onset of the festivities. Thoroughly cleaning your home rids it of bad luck of the past year and prepares it to be filled with great feng shui energy.

If you are still unsure where to start, here are some tips and tricks that could help you welcome the year with a clean and organised home:

1. Don’t rush!

Incessant cramming will lead you nowhere. Have a realistic plan of cleaning your home. This will help you work thoroughly in cleaning your space, room by room, even if you have a short amount of time.

2. Tidy up first.

Work becomes harder if the room is filled with clutter. Tidy up first before you really clean the house. Pick up anything that is out of place and gather items that need to be put away. By doing so, you can dust and vacuum all over the room easily.

3. Make a list.

It would be really helpful for you to make a list of areas that you want to concentrate on and gather all the cleaning products that you need first before doing the actual cleaning. Be sure to star from top to bottom regardless if it’s the whole house or just a single room.

4. Get some help.

Cleaning your home is not the obligation of just one person. Even if you are the strongest person in your home, you can't do all the cleaning all by yourself. Best if you get some help from your kids, roommates, or family members and divide the tasks among yourselves.

5. Let your appliances do the hard work for you.

Every home has appliances that they can trust in doing the cleaning for them. When you start dusting and vacuuming, load the washing machine with your soiled clothes so that these appliances are working while you do other things. The Chinese believe that they should not do the laundry while the festivities are ongoing so soiled clothes must be washed, dried, and folded before the first day of the Lunar month. Let your appliances do the hard work for you so that you can be more efficient and effective.

6. Take your time.

Your kitchen and bathroom require some heavy cleaning. Be sure to get a head start by spraying cleaning products on soap marks, stains, grease, and dirt. Give your cleaning agents time to work and cut through the build-up while you do other things. After you let them sit there for quite some time, removing gunk will be much easier.

7. Your cleaning machines need some cleaning, too.

After everything is done, give your cleaning materials a good wash, too. Mildew, soap scum, and mould can develop if you don’t clean them so give them a little TLC after you’re done using them.
