"When decorating outdoors, think of the space as an extension of your home. Be creative and have fun setting them up," says Jill Vegas, author of Speed Decorating: A Pro Stager's Tips. Yes, this is doable even if your balcony is small!

To create this outdoor room, here are some things to consider:

1. Measure your balcony. "You may have a sense of how much furniture you can accommodate here, but taking measurements with you to the store will help in choosing specific pieces," says Vegas.

2. Get weatherproof furniture. Make sure pieces of your outdoor furniture can hold up to the elements, are perfect for outdoor use, and have durable fabrics and rustproof metals. Get double-duty pieces as well, like an ottoman that can work as a side table. If your balcony is significantly small, you can use foldaway and stackable pieces.

3. Add flowers, plants, and herbs. Use potted plants to add colour to your space and conceal architectural features. You can also go up and do vertical gardening—tips here.

4. Soften the space with textiles. Use fabrics to bring softness to your outdoor area. Look for an outdoor rug that is water-resistant, and place cushions on your chairs. "Those cushy pieces will also make outdoor furniture a whole lot more comfortable," advises Vegas.

5. Use accessories to pull everything together. "Decorative accents are important, even when the view is the primary attraction. Plants, vases of flowers, table linens, pillows, and cushions will give the space the unified look of a real room," concludes Vegas.
