"There is something enticing and uplifting about a clean home," says Laura Dellutri, author of Speed Cleaning 101: House Cleaning Tips to Cut Your Cleaning Time in Half! "It gives us a sense of accomplishment and makes a statement about how we control our home environments. Part of our style includes our standard of cleaning."

Cleaning can be a quite a chore at times. Get started and be inspired by these words of wisdom from the experts:

1. Step back and take a few minutes to analyse the job in its entirety.

Doing this actually "saves you time in the end because you'll find you are working more efficiently," says Dellutri.

2. Before starting, identify the following:

    • Length of time it will take you to finish the task
    • Ways you can do to make the cleaning task easier and faster
    • Most efficient traffic pattern (i.e., which room to tackle first)

Dellutri explains, "Experience shows that if you know the time involved to complete a task—for example, mopping the kitchen floor should take 5 minutes—you are more apt to do the task because you can justify finding the time in your busy schedule or daily routine."

3. Set a standard for yourself.

Donna Smallin, author of The One-Minute Cleaner Plain & Simple: 500 Tips for Cleaning Smarter, Not Harder, advises: "Whatever your cleaning goals, know that the only standards that matter are those you set for yourself. Whether you enjoy cleaning or do anything you can to avoid it, there's no point in making it any harder than it has to be."

4. You don't have to be an expert.

"You don't need a degree in housekeeping to maintain a clean, uncluttered home," furthers Smallin. All you need is to arm yourself with the right tools and techniques.

5. No need to look far and wide for cleaning solutions.

"You may not know this, but some of the very best spot and stain removers are things you use every single day!" says Linda Cob of How the Queen Cleans Everything. Cases in point: vinegar, baking soda, lemon, and more!

6. Encourage everyone at home to make their beds daily.

"Having the bed made gives the entire bedroom a neat appearance," says Dellutri. Parents, set a good example to your little ones so they can learn from what they see from you.

7. Don't forget the fridge.

"When you wipe out the refrigerator, always use a cloth or sponge moistened with white vinegar. It leaves a clean, fresh scent and helps prevent mildew," reminds Cob.

8. Switch to eco-friendly products.

"A true green cleaning program goes beyond the cleaning solutions used and includes the equipment and procedures, too," says Anne B. Kocsis of The Complete Guide to Eco-Friendly House Cleaning: Everything You Need to Know Explained Simply.

9. Manage your paper clutter.

Brenda Evans, who wrote Granny's Household Hints: Traditional Tips for a Clean, Green Home, suggests that removing clutter like old newspapers and magazines will help you cut down on the amount of dust in your home.

10. Here's another reason to clean your home: it is an investment!

"Regular upkeep helps carpets and furnishings last longer. A regular cleaning routine can save you money in the long run," asserts Smallin.
