There are two types of house paint: water-based and oil-based. Paints used in the home contain harmful chemicals, which can evaporate as toxic fumes. When inhaled, it can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation as well as increase risk of a range of cancers especially lung cancer, according to the World Health Organisation.

Here are some paint brands that repel mosquitoes, reduce odour and dirt, and are anti-mould:

1. Ales Anti-Mosq
Used by local government agencies, Japan-based firm Kansai Paint contains permethrin, a natural compound found in chrysanthemums that is commonly used as insecticide. Suitable only for indoors, it can prevent insects such as Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, ants, and small spiders from resting on the wall.

2. Nippon Paint Odourless series
Ideal for people who are sensitive to pain odour, this paint boasts almost no odour and is washable, resistant to fading, chalking and fungus, and free from ammonia, lead, and mercury. The series includes Nippon Paint Odour-less Easy Wash, Nippon Paint Odourless Premium All-in-1, and Nippon Paint Odourless Medifresh.

3. Dulux anti-mould paint
Singapore’s high humidity climate is a breeding catalyst for mould and fungus, which produce allergens and may cause allergic reaction. For damp ceilings such as kitchen and bathroom, consider using Dulux Mould Guard or Nippon Paint Odour-less Anti-mould Ceiling. Before painting, clean the area thoroughly and treat fungi-affected areas with a fungicidal wash.
