Tips When Shopping For Furniture And Home Decor Online

The internet is an open marketplace. Online shopping has become a big hit because it’s convenient and more practical for busy homemakers as at times it’s cheaper than going to physical stores.

However, not all internet retailers are reliable. As a shopper, you must be very wise and careful before putting everything in your virtual cart and hitting that BUY button. While it takes time to find high-quality furniture for the best prices online, there are certain things you need to keep in mind when shopping for home decors online.

1. Compare prices before purchasing.

Don’t buy a piece of furniture just because it’s affordable. Do more extensive research by comparing prices in three to five stores that offer the furniture you want before putting the item in your cart. Note the cost of the items, shipping costs, any tax charges, and if the store charges for return shipping or re-stocking. It might surprise you to find out that the item you are eyeing in that website costs way cheaper in other stores.

2. Read everything!

And by everything, we mean even the online store’s warranties and return policies. This is a piece of very important information that most online shoppers overlook. You must read the seller's return exchange and refund policy before you purchase items. Even if you’ve bought from the same online store in the past, it would still be wise to check the policies because there is a good chance that it may change without prior notice.

3. Do not forget the description.

Because it’s visually appealing, buyers have the tendency to purchase an item right away. This is a common mistake that shoppers do: merely looking at the photos of the items on the website. This is why Taobao, a favourite among many Singaporean shoppers, recently launched its home and living channel, Jiyoujia, which has a "Home Lab" portal.

The portal provides furniture recommendations via suggested curated sets of Jiyoujia products featured through interactive digital showcases, where users can hover over each item for more information. Looks can be deceiving so you must read the descriptions so that you will know the quality of the item you are purchasing.

4. Be wary of hidden costs and shipping fees.

You must not overlook the shipping fee that your purchase entails. Sure, the item is cheap but there are costs that can make the product you’ve purchased expensive. Make sure that you’ve checked and determined the hidden costs, such as taxes, duties, and shipping charges before buying the entire fleet of kitchenware you’ve been dreaming of.

5. Shop from secure sites only.

To reduce the risk of identity theft, only buy furniture from secure websites. Check first the URL page of the website before you proceed to checkout. You’ll know that the site is legit if the URL changes to begin with https instead of http. Or, you might see a lock icon on the bottom of the web page which is also an indicator of website security. Trusted sites offers a delightful and convenient shopping experience to Singaporeans since they can shop without worrying so much about fraud and identity theft.

6. Reviews matter.

Customer feedback is an important aspect of shopping. Many websites allow customers to post their reviews about the furniture purchased directly on the site. You can save yourself from problems when you steer clear of any pieces with several bad reviews as this indicates poor construction or issues with durability.
