5 Things You Should Know This Week: 31 December 2018

These are some of the news you should know this week:

1. What to expect from Singapore Design Week 2019

Singapore Design Week 2019, to be held from from 4 to 17 March, will build on winning partnerships to create a festival for all. Diverse offerings will include the return of Brainstorm Design, SingaPlural, ground-up district activations, and the first-ever UNESCO Creative Cities of Design Public Forum.

Organised by the DesignSingapore Council (Dsg), SDW 2019 will showcase programmes forged from its successful partnerships with FORTUNE and Wallpaper* for Brainstorm Design, and with the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) for SingaPlural, an annual design platform, to explore deeper and more complex connections between design, its impact, and evolution. SDW’s long-standing trade show, the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS), will be held at a new venue at the Marina Bay Sands, while Dsg will continue to partner Wallpaper* to present the Wallpaper* Handmade Exhibition. Held at the National Museum of Singapore for 2019, Handmade will showcase pieces by eight Singapore creatives. Together with the National Heritage Board (NHB), Dsg will enliven the Bras Basah.Bugis precinct with public artworks created by artists and designers through an open call.

Building on successful initiatives to rally the ground among the design community which yielded many creative ideas at SDW 2018, the 2019 festival will feature a new home-grown district activation in the heart of Bukit Pasoh Road. Organised by local creative studio OuterEdit, Street of Clans is a creative celebration bringing together a cross-blend of Singapore’s oldest and newest communities empowered by design, imagination and the age-old clan values of Kinship and Unity.

The popular Singapore Urban Design Festival (#UDFSG), which is organised by LOPELAB, will return for its second edition and will break new ground through the activation of a multi-storey carpark in Jalan Besar, highlighting the potential of underutilised spaces in bringing the community together.

On the international arena, Dsg will also work more closely with its overseas partners to come up with more enriching programmes at SDW 2019. This includes the first-ever UNESCO Creative Cities of Design Public Forum which will invite participants to discuss how good design can make an impact on the different facets of their lives. 3. Astell&Kern introduces ultra portable high performance audio player

Astell&Kern, the hi-fi audio brand of IRIVER, launched a new high-end model A&ultima SP1000M in Singapore. A&ultima is A&K’s high-end lineup that is packed with the latest technologies and features. SP1000M is a follow-up model of A&ultima SP1000, launched in 2017, that has enhanced portability and affordability while preserving the same masterful sound of its predecessor.

The “M” in SP1000M does not stand for a specific word, but rather encompasses directions that the product aims to pursue: Mini as it is smaller than SP1000; Mobility as it is more portable; Maximum as it produces the highest-quality audio; and Mate as it can used at anytime, from anywhere.

Compared to its predecessor, SP1000M has enhanced portability thanks to its aluminium body, which guarantees lightness without compromising durability, and the 4.1-inch LCD display allows the user to conveniently control the device with one hand. SP1000M supports a max resolution of 32bit/384kHz for PCM files and native playback of DSD256 files and the USB 3.0(Type-C) enables fast data transfer. The product has an on-board memory of 128GB, which can be expanded to 528GB via microSD card. It is available in Singapore at a recommended retail price (RRP) of $3,599 (including GST) at authorised retailers including AV One, Connect IT, E1 Personal Audio, Jaben, Music Sanctuary, Stereo Electronics, and Treoo.com.

4. Experience LG’s next-gen pedestal mini washer and smarter front-loader

Winner of a 2019 CES Innovation Award, LG’s large-capacity TWINWash™ washer and dryer will make their debut in Las Vegas next month. The complete system of ultra-large capacity washer, convenient SideKick™ pedestal washer and DUAL Inverter Heat Pump™ dryer makes it possible to run two loads at once while gently drying a third at low temperature. LG’s revolutionary laundry solution also incorporates Wi-Fi and SmartThinQ®, enhancing user convenience by making laundry, and the home, more intelligent.

It features a 27-inch LG TWINWash front-loader and a DUAL Inverter Heat Pump™ dryer capable of delivering more user benefits. While the main washer handles the larger loads, the SideKick unit underneath is ideal for smaller loads or more delicate clothing that requires a gentler touch. With an increased capacity and simultaneous washing capability, LG TWINWash is perfect for large families, able to accommodate a king-size comforter and full set of bedding easily at the same time.

The advanced washer is able to deliver cleaner laundry in less time thanks to LG’s cutting-edge technologies such as TurboWash™360° which combines five powerful jets with 6Motion™ to allow water to penetrate deep into fabrics. The new dryer’s Dual Inverter Heat Pump means even more energy savings and with a lower drying temperature, clothes last longer and shrink less. What’s more, Auto Cleaning Condenser keeps the condenser free of lint and debris to improve air circulation, saving homeowners a chore and ensuring superior drying results.

Equipped with Wi-Fi and SmartThinQ, the TWINWash washer and dryer are compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, enabling the user to turn the machines on or off, start or pause a load, monitor the cycle status and more using voice commands and a smartphone app. The dryer’s Smart Pairing function eliminates the need to manually choose a drying cycle as LG’s intelligent technology suggests the most optimal setting.
