We Launched the First Ever Cromly Design Village Last Weekend!

Our inaugural design fair called Cromly Design Village opened last weekend here at 20 Bedok South Road, where we saw beautiful booths and setups by our participants. Visitors and guests were able to talk to interior designers and home décor merchants, got tips about fixing up their own spaces, as well as ideas on how they can snag their own interior design packages. The following firms and merchants participated in this year’s design fair, namely: Add Space, Artis Interior, Story of Us, notch lifestyle + design, Image Creative, Rezt n Relax, Sky Creation, Atelier Concept, Wassertec, Inspect First, Fossil Collections, Cellini, SquareRooms, Photogenie, and LuckAnn

Feel like you missed out? Don’t fret! We’re opening the Cromly Design Village gates again next weekend, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and we’d really love to see you there! Check out more details here.

Montreal-based multidisciplinary designer and creative director Stéphane Leathead comes out with his very first foray in furniture design: the EXOCET chair, a beautiful, limited-edition chair that can be manipulated into various forms.

Great for lounging, taking naps, or reading books with a companion, the EXOCET chair is one piece of furniture we’d love to add to our collections! The graceful but clean lines and multifunctionality add to the brilliance of its design, and it can work as both a sculptural and useful addition to the home.

Design for Tower in Vienna Reminds Us Of…Jengga!

Dutch studio MVRDV had a unique challenge when they took upon architectural design of Hocchaus Tower in the Simmering district in Vienna, Austria: A strict zoning regulation requires that all structures in the vicinity must not put any of its neighbours in the shade for more than two hours a day. And because tall buildings, nay, skyscrapers can block off a lot of sunlight from its next-door neighbours, MVRDV had to come up with a way that lets the Hocchaus Tower never cut off sunlight for its neighbourhood.

As you can see in the photos above, the mixed-use Hocchaus Tower has been designed pretty much looking like a precarious Jengga stack: the first 10 storeys are each positioned at a slightly different angle, which means that the tower will never cut off the rising and setting sun, as well as siphon strong winds away from the plaza. These 10 floors will also have space for outdoor terraces, while the remaining 20 storeys above will follow conventional layouts, but will have 12-foot-high ceilings (read: lots of natural light!). The concrete, steel, and glass structure is slated to be constructed next year, and will be completed by 2018.

Are You Ready for Alexander Wang’s Debut Furniture Collection?

Gird your loins, fashion and ID fans! Alexander Wang will be launching his furniture collection for 101-year-old furniture manufacturer Poltrona Frau next month. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the 30-year-old fashion designer and creative director of Balenciaga said, “Over the last 10 years, furniture is where my interest really evolved. When I started working in fashion, I always had an idea of an environment in my head, but how to actualize it, and what the references meant, that’s new.”

His collection includes an US$8,800 brass-footed bean bag in inky black shearling and another in leather, a bar cabinet with portions in shagreen and jagged brass shelves. As WSJ’s Sarah Medford says, “The offerings [from Wang’s debut furniture collection] are totems of Wang’s louche interpretation of luxury and his streetwise attitude.” We can’t wait to see the rest!
